Free Government iPhone With Medicaid: You Already Qualify

If you have Medicaid, this is the easiest free government iPhone application you will ever make. Medicaid is one of the programs that automatically qualifies you for Lifeline, the federal benefit behind every free iPhone we provide. Most members are never told this, so the benefit just sits there unused. Here is exactly how it works, what to have ready, and how to claim yours.

Why Medicaid Qualifies You

Lifeline is the federal program that discounts phone service for low-income households: $9.25 off your bill every month, or $34.25 if you live on Tribal lands. You can qualify in one of two ways, by household income, or by taking part in a program on Lifeline’s official list. Medicaid sits right at the top of that list, alongside SNAP, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Federal Public Housing Assistance and Veterans Pension benefits.

That means you do not need to prove your income at all. Your Medicaid participation is the proof. When you apply, the National Verifier, the federal system that decides every Lifeline application, often confirms your enrollment automatically by checking government databases. No payslips, no tax returns, no long forms about money.

Plenty of households qualify through more than one program at once. If your family also receives food assistance, our guide to a free government iPhone with SNAP and EBT explains that route too. You only need one of them.

What to Have Ready

Most Medicaid applications sail through the automatic check in minutes. Occasionally the Verifier cannot match your details, usually because of a name spelling or an old address on file, and it asks for a document instead. Having these ready means a small hiccup never turns into a dead end:

  • A photo ID, such as a driver’s license or state ID, to confirm you are who you say you are
  • Your current home address, written exactly as it appears on your records
  • Your Medicaid card, or a Medicaid award or approval letter, as backup proof if the automatic check asks for one
  • The last 4 digits of your Social Security number, which the Verifier uses to run the check

One safety note: only ever share documents through your application with us or directly with the National Verifier. Never send photos of your ID or benefits letters to random websites or text messages.

Medicaid Goes by Other Names

Medicaid is a federal program, but each state runs its own version, and many states give it a local name. If your card says one of these, you still have Medicaid, and you still qualify:

  • Medi-Cal in California
  • TennCare in Tennessee
  • AHCCCS in Arizona

Other states use their own names too, and some cards simply show a health plan brand. Not sure whether your coverage is Medicaid? Check the letter that arrived with your card, or ask us through our support page before you apply.

How to Apply, Step by Step

1

Check First

Run our quick eligibility checker to confirm your details look right before you start. It takes about a minute.

2

Apply Online

Complete our application with your Medicaid details. The National Verifier reviews it, and most Medicaid applicants are confirmed automatically.

3

Pick Your iPhone

Choose your free iPhone and your plan. Once you are approved, your phone ships with its SIM kit ready to activate.

If Your Medicaid Ends

Life changes, and Medicaid renewals come around every year. If your coverage ends, do not panic, and do not assume your phone benefit ends with it. Plenty of people whose Medicaid stops still qualify for Lifeline the other way: by income.

The income route covers households at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines. In 2026 that is $21,546 a year for a one-person household and $44,550 for a family of four, with the limit rising by $7,668 for each extra person. If your household income fits, your benefit carries on, just under a different qualifying route.

You will also get a yearly recertification notice for Lifeline itself. Answer it on time and your discount keeps running without a gap. Full details live on our Lifeline program page, and if anything about your situation changes mid-year, talk to us. We would much rather help you switch routes than see you lose service.

Pick Your iPhone

Every phone below works with every plan, and your Lifeline discount applies the same way whichever you choose. Our honest recommendation for most Medicaid members is the free iPhone SE: it is the fastest of the free phones and still runs the current iOS, so banking, health and benefits apps keep working properly.

ModelPriceWhy Pick It
iPhone SE (2020)FreeFastest free iPhone, current iOS, our top pick
iPhone 7FreeSimple, familiar, a great first smartphone
iPhone 11DiscountedBigger screen and much better cameras

Whichever phone you choose, plans start at $10 a month with the Lifeline discount applied, and on Tribal lands the Essential and Everyday plans drop to $0 a month.

Questions

Medicaid and Free iPhone FAQs

Does Medicaid in any state count?

Yes. Medicaid is a federal program even though each state runs it and some states rename it. As long as you are actively enrolled, in any state, you meet Lifeline’s program requirement. The National Verifier confirms your enrollment when you apply.

Do I need my Medicaid card to apply?

Usually not in your hand. Most applications are verified automatically against government databases, with no documents at all. Keep your Medicaid card or award letter nearby anyway: if the automatic check cannot match your details, uploading one of those is the quick fix.

I have Medicare and Medicaid. Does that help?

Yes. You are what is called dual eligible. Medicare on its own is not a Lifeline qualifier, but Medicaid is, so it is your Medicaid coverage that qualifies you. Apply using your Medicaid details and the Verifier will do the rest.

Will getting a free phone affect my Medicaid?

No. Lifeline is a separate federal program overseen by the FCC. Claiming a Lifeline phone and monthly discount does not reduce, change or put your Medicaid coverage at risk, and the benefit is not counted as income for Medicaid purposes.

My card says Medi-Cal, not Medicaid. Do I still qualify?

Yes. Medi-Cal is simply California’s name for Medicaid, just as TennCare is Tennessee’s name and AHCCCS is Arizona’s. Different name on the card, same federal program underneath, and the same qualification for a free government iPhone.
