Free iPhone 15? Here Is Why the Answer Is No

We sell iPhones for a living, so it might surprise you that we are the ones saying this: there is no free iPhone 15. Not from us, not from the government, and not from any honest provider. This guide shows the math, explains how carrier “free iPhone 15” deals work, and lays out what you can get free or discounted today.

The Program Math, in Plain Numbers

Lifeline, the federal program behind free government phones, is a service discount. It takes $9.25 off a monthly bill, or $34.25 on Tribal lands. That is the whole subsidy. The government does not buy phones for anyone, and it never has.

Providers like us use that discount to keep your plan cheap, and we supply a phone ourselves. For the numbers to work, that phone has to be an affordable refurbished model. A recent flagship still costs many hundreds of dollars, even second hand. Handing one to every approved customer on a $9.25 monthly subsidy would put any provider out of business within months.

$9.25

The monthly Lifeline discount. That is the entire government contribution toward your service.

Hundreds

What a recent flagship iPhone still costs, even refurbished. The gap is not close.

$0

What the government pays toward any phone, for anyone, in 2026.

That is why the genuine free tier, from every honest Lifeline provider, is a refurbished iPhone 7 or SE class phone. It is simply what the economics allow.

How Carrier “Free iPhone 15” Deals Actually Work

So why does every carrier website seem to offer one free? Because their “free” is a financing arrangement in a costume. The mechanism is almost always the same:

  • A valuable trade-in: you hand over a recent phone, or pay a large part of the price up front
  • Financing over 24 to 36 months: the rest of the price becomes a monthly device payment
  • Bill credits cancel it out: monthly credits match the payment, but only while you stay
  • A premium plan is required: the top-tier unlimited plans, typically costing several times our Lifeline plan prices, for the whole period
  • A credit check decides: financing approval comes first, and not everyone passes

Leave early, downgrade the plan, or miss a condition, and the credits stop while the remaining phone balance comes due. Add the premium plan cost across three years and the “free” phone is often the most expensive way to own it. Judge any deal on total cost, not on the headline.

If You Truly Want an iPhone 15

Wanting one is completely reasonable. Here are the three honest routes to one, or to something close:

Buy Refurbished, Outright

Reputable refurbished sellers offer the 15 for far less than new. Look for clear grading, a warranty and a return policy you can use, and the phone is yours with no plan attached.

Take a Carrier Deal, Eyes Open

If you already pay for a premium plan and will stay the full term, the credits can work out. Read the total cost over 24 to 36 months first, including the trade-in you are giving up.

Take the Free SE Now

The free iPhone SE covers school, work, family chats and video calls today, on current software. Bank what you would have paid each month and buy your upgrade later, on your terms.

Whichever route you choose, the habit that protects you is the same: ask what the total cost is, over the whole period, before you agree to anything. Our guide on whether a free government iPhone is legit walks through the checks in detail.

The same honesty applies to “free 5G iPhones”

If a site promises a free 5G flagship, the math on this page applies word for word. Our free 5G government phones guide explains the full picture, including when paying for a 5G upgrade is genuinely worth it.

Free iPhone 15 FAQs

Can Lifeline ever cover an iPhone 15?

No. Lifeline is a $9.25 monthly service discount ($34.25 on Tribal lands). It is not a device fund, and the government does not purchase phones for anyone. No provider can give away a recent flagship on that subsidy and stay in business, which is why none honestly do.

Why do ads say “free iPhone 15” then?

Most of those ads describe carrier financing deals, where monthly bill credits offset a financed phone while you stay on a premium plan for 24 to 36 months. Others are simply misleading. Either way, read the small print: the trade-in requirement, the plan requirement, and what you owe if you leave early.

Is a refurbished iPhone 13 close enough?

For most people, yes. The iPhone 13 gives you 5G, an excellent camera, strong battery life and the current iOS, for far less than a 15. It is our most popular paid upgrade for exactly that reason. Compare both models on our iPhone 12 and 13 page.

Will The iPhone offer the 15 later?

Honestly, only if refurbished prices fall to a level that works as an upgrade. We will not promise dates we cannot keep. If it makes sense one day, it will appear on our phones page alongside every other model, at a price confirmed before payment.

What is the newest free iPhone anywhere?

From any honest provider, the free tier is refurbished SE class phones: fast chips, current software, $0 with an approved application. Anyone advertising a free current flagship through a government program is describing something that does not exist. Check your eligibility with us and a free SE can be on its way without any of that risk.
